明嘉靖年间，一对恋人张金生、王玉环到山亭避雨时遇上贺总兵之子贺三郎。贺调戏玉环未遂，坠涧身亡。贺总兵责令该县县官黄伯贤将玉环斩首，黄不忍屈斩无辜，将其释放。黄女秀兰、义女丘萍担心父亲落难，皆愿替玉环去死；玉环也怕恩人吃罪，不肯离去。无奈，3女在神像前争抢"生死牌"，结果，秀兰抢得"死"牌。法场上，贺总兵看出破绽，下令缓刑验犯，并将黄伯贤押监。待伯贤等人行刑之日，幸遇湖广巡按海瑞，于是冤情大白。。The film was written and directed by Stuart Urban, and commissioned to mark the tenth anniversary of the Falklands War. The film was closely based on the historical record, and all of the major incidents portrayed were drawn from contemporary accounts by those who took part. Filming took place on the Falkland Islands and at Ealing Studios. Urban is a fluent Spanish-speaker, and plays an uncredited role as the Argentine radio operator.。
